The soul of Korean skin-care routine: sheet masks
Elena Lezhneva

K-beauty newbies often start their journey with BB creams and sheet masks. Sheet (or fabric) masks are among the most popular and sought-after products produced by Koreans. However, they can raise many questions: what are the benefits, how often to use them and what are the best masks?

In this post we will try to answer all of the questions you commonly ask us about sheet masks. And if you still need help, please don’t hesitate to leave your comment below or flick us an email.

WHAT ARE SHEET MASKS

Sheet masks are a one time use product, applied on skin and left for in-depth exposure over 15-20 minutes. They look like an impregnated non-woven fabric (we’ll talk about different types of material below) and resemble a napkin.

Many Korean brands are seeking to stand out by come up with very original designs. These masks can transform into a cat, pug, masquerade guest and what not. Don’t forget to take a picture for your Instagram!

Sheet masks are produced not only for facial skin, but also for other areas of your face and body: lip and eye patches, neck masks, body patches, masks and patches for knees, elbows, feet, and hands.

BENEFITS OF SHEET MASKS

The main effect of all sheets masks is moisturizing. In addition to that, depending on key ingredients, these masks can provide brightening, whitening, hydration, nutrition, rejuvenation, anti-inflammation and acne treatment.

Sheet masks are often called the soul of Korean skin-care, and many Korean women (and not only women!) wear sheet masks every day!

HOW THEY WORK

Sheet masks are soaked in beneficial essences and serums which directly affect your skin for 15-30 minutes. They create an “occlusive barrier,” which means it physically seals in active serums and ingredients underneath, not allowing them to evaporate. Your skin will absorb everything it needs!

Just be mindful that sheet masks often contain extracts of fruits and berries, and some allergic reaction may occur. Be careful with sheets masks containing citrus fruits, strawberries, and honey if your skin is very sensitive.

And of course, no sheet masks should contain parabens and artificial colors.

HOW TO USE

Sheet masks are wonderful in their versatility. Do you have only one hour before leaving the house for an important event? This would be enough time for a sheet mask and a follow up make-up!

The routine is as follows:

1. Cleansing

2. Toning (this will help your skin to absorb sheet mask’s essence even better)

3. Mask Application. Open the package and remove your mask, place on the face and spread around, putting eye and mouth slots in the right places. After that you'll need to lie down and relax for 15-20 min. This will allow the maximum absorbency. Don’t leave the mask on for a longer time, this will not make you skin any better, and can cause dryness and redness. Pat the remaining essence into skin. You are ready to go (on a date or to bed)!

They recommend using sheet masks 2-3 times a week, and people with dry skin could wear them everyday.

TYPES OF SHEET MASKS

Cotton and other fiber/pulp masks

These masks are very inexpensive and can provide good moisture for your skin. They evaporate very quickly compared to other types, and their paper-like texture may lack the “contouring” to remain in place for very long.

Hydro-gel

Hydro-gel masks offer better performance than fiber and pulp masks. They are typically produced as a two piece: top and bottom halves that are applied separately. Their product name is derived from the production process that blends cosmetic serums with gelatin, which gives the mask the feel of a cool, thin film layer. Hydro-gel masks require careful handling; the fabric is rather thin and prone to tearing.

Bio Cellulose

Skin care experts and biochemists consider masks woven from bio cellulose ( an all natural fiber) to be the gold standard for hydrating and treating skin. Bio cellulose mask fabrics provide skin-tight dermal adhesion, allowing them to transfer cosmetic ingredients very efficiently. The texture of a bio cellulose mask feels like a cool, moist gel but its underlying structure is incredibly strong and resilient. Bio cellulose masks do not dry out during application.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Wear your sheet mask while bathing or taking a shower

It’s only very relaxing but also provides an intensive “steamcial” which helps to absorb the product even better.

Keep you masks in the fridge

It cools your skin and provides instant toning - perfect treat after sun exposure under harsh New Zealand sun or intensive work out!

Try double sheet masking

There are two methods how you do it. Method one is applying a serum under the sheet mask to address a particular skin concern. Second method is about using two masks: one after one. This method is helpful for skin that has several concerns. For example, you have clogged pores and you want to calm your skin. You can start with a clarifying sheet or clay mask and follow up with a soothing sheet mask.
