Living in a big city is difficult not only for us but for our skin as well. Exhaust emissions, industrial dust, combustion products - most of these particles are 20 times smaller than our pores, which means that they can easily penetrate the skin and do their dirty work there. Walking from house to office is just enough time to get a huge portion of toxins for your skin.
According to the World Health Organization, pollutants have a negative impact not only on the lungs and the heart but also on the skin. Independent studies show that pollutants lead to skin aging, allergic reactions, atopic dermatitis, eczema, and acne. It has been proved that pollutants (not smoking and exposure to sun) are the main cause of the appearance of pigment spots on the cheeks. Moreover, 80% of all visual signs of skin aging appear precisely under the influence of toxins. Here you have a gray complexion, and wrinkles, and dryness, and flabbiness.
While it's difficult to change the environmental situation, we can neutralize its negative effects. Leading beauty brands are already turning to the full spectrum of cosmetic ranges for fighting pollution - from plant extracts to complex compounds that create a barrier between the skin and harmful toxins. A lot of research has been dedicated to the development of improved formulas, and antioxidants are considered to be the most effective way of fighting the complex aggressive substances. The strongest antioxidants are vitamins A, C, E, and Coenzyme Q10. Since these components are quite common and are often found in good skin care products, it's not necessary to buy separate creams, serums, and masks with anti-pollutants. Most Korean brands are adding them to the majority of their products anyway.
It's worth mentioning that Anti-Pollution products should work in two ways:
- Create a protective layer on the skin that doesn't form an unpleasant film, but still, act as a barrier blocking the penetration of harmful particles;
- Combat pollutants thanks to the help of to antioxidants. These ingredients fight the oxidative processes in the skin cells and the aging processes of collagen and elastin.
The main ingredients that effectively fight pollutants, liked mentioned briefly above, are vitamin B3 (or niacinamide), Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid), Vitamin E (tocopherol), Resveratrol (resveratrol), Tomato extract, Green tea, Moringa (moringa oleifera), Sea kritmuma (chritmum maritimum) and Tephrosia purpurea (wild indigo). We've mentioned the official names of the components, so it's easier for you to look for them in the composition of the products.
Another important thing to mention (again and again) is a regular use of sunscreens - at any time of the year, in any weather. This is the so-called reinsurance for your skin. After all, not only toxins but UVB and UVA rays are responsible for aging. And while UVB rays are responsible for burns, UVA penetrate deeply into the skin and trigger destructive chemical reactions.
And, of course, don't forget that in the conditions of city life, the skin requires deep cleansing and proper exfoliating. Your skin should be properly cleaned both in the morning and at night.
