Cleansing water has been breaking records of sales for several years, and this incredible demand forces manufacturers to puzzle over what new ingredients to add to the composition so that the new version is even better than the previous one. So what is a cleansing water - the product that everyone talks about? Is it a miracle water that solves all the skin problems? How does it work on our skin? Is it suitable for any skin type and age?
Cleansing water is a solution for purifying the skin and removing makeup. As a rule, it has no color or scent. By its chemical composition cleansing water resembles an emulsion. It’s an aqueous solution containing up to 95% water, oil, emulsifier and various additives (preservative, perfume, pH regulator, etc.).
How it works: micro-drops of oil bind sebum and cosmetic residues on the surface of the skin and dissolve them from inside. Special substances (amphiphilic emulsifiers) help to wash off these contaminants with water. A "classic" example of such emulsifiers are inexpensive ethoxylated oily alcohols and polysorbates: PEG-8 Stearate, PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Polysorbate-20 and so on.
High content of water and oils makes cleansing waters a universal skin cleanser, and this is very beneficial from a cosmetological point of view. There are no age and skin type restrictions.
Is cleansing water suitable only for basic skin cleansing, or can it also remove makeup from the eyes?
Initially, cleansing water was used exclusively by people with various skin diseases. Later it was used as a hygienic product for the care of new-borns, and then became widely used in cosmetology for toning of dry and sensitive skin. Right now, cleansing water is a popular beauty product, produced by both expensive brands, and democratic, pharmacy ones.
Cleansing water is ideal for problematic, dry and sensitive skin. Due to the absence of drying components, it can gently remove dead cells, dust and grease from the pores, without drying the epidermis.
It is suitable for removing makeup from the eyes (sometimes even waterproof). Often, the composition of waterproof mascara includes oily acids, which prevent it from "melting" when coming into contact with water. Amino acids from cleansing water can dissolve them.
How often can I use cleansing water during the day? Can I clean my face with this product in the morning and in the evening?
When people see the word "water" on the label, they sometimes confuse it with thermal water. This is absolutely wrong. Cleansing waters are different from thermal tonic and shouldn’t be used instead of them. You can use a cleansing water in the morning if you have oily skin. In other cases, we’d recommend a normal wash clean, followed by a toner (to "cheer up" the skin). The best time to use cleansing water is in the evening before going to bed.
Are there any disadvantages in the use of cleansing water?
Like any other cosmetic product, cleansing water can provoke an allergic reaction in the form of itching, burning, redness on some people.
Do I have to wash off cleansing water?
In the last years manufacturers have been using new technological emulsifiers for the production of cleansing water. The first group of emulsifiers - poloxamer (Poloxamer 188, Poloxamer 407) - was borrowed from the pharmaceutical industry, where they were used as a filler for tablets and as an emulsifier of creams and emulsions. Poloxamer 188 is also used to treat constipation and to purify wounds. The second group of emulsifiers - Lauryl Glucoside & Coco Glucoside – is sometimes called the "green chemistry", which "sews" fatty acids of oils and sugars. All these emulsifiers belong to the class of low irritating and non-toxic ingredients, which shouldn’t irritate even the eyes. Cleansing waters based on these emulsifiers do not require washing off.
Do surfactants from cleansing waters harm the skin?
If you systematically do not wash off the cleansing water, which contains PEG and Polysorbate, you can eventually get dry patches, redness and increased sensitivity of the skin. Therefore, if you see their presence in the composition of your product – make sure you wash off the product from the face, even if the label says the opposite.
Do I need to additionally moisturize my skin after the cleansing water?
Absolutely! Each product has its own tasks. Even if the label says that the cleansing water perfectly moisturizes the skin, this does not mean that it will replace your skincare. Always apply a moisturizing product after cleansing your skin.
How to use cleansing water.
Soak the cotton pad with a cleansing water. Wipe your face, moving on massage lines. If you are washing off eye makeup, apply the cotton pad to your eyelashes area and wait for five-ten seconds. Then swipe it from the inner to the outer corner of the eye - your mascara and shadows will remain on the disk. If your cleansing water requires washing off, be sure to rinse your face with warm water. Follow with your normal skincare routine.
